US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard visits Vrindavan unit
US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard representing Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district visited the Akshaya Patra unit at Vrindavan during her trip to India recently. The Congresswoman expressed her pleasure at the work Akshaya Patra has undertaken feeding over 130,000 school children the mid-day meal in the area, and reaching out to over 1.4 million children a day across India. She was especially impressed with the roti (Indian flat bread) making machine used in the Vrindavan kitchen capable of producing up to 60,000 freshly cooked rotis an hour.
Tulsi was appreciative of the significant impact this program has had in eradicating hunger and malnutrition, and was also impressed listening to a few stories of the Government school children who were the beneficiaries of Akshaya Patra’s food, and are now in very good positions in society.
Elected in 2012 Tulsi is the first American Samoan and the first Hindu to be elected to the United States Congress. A combat veteran, Tulsi served two combat tours to the Middle East, one in 2004, and then again in 2009. She serves on the Armed Forces, Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security Committees. Tulsi currently also serves as a Military Police Company Commander with the Hawaii Army National Guard.
