As the recently conducted training in Bihar for food safety and personal hygiene was received well, the Union Human Resource Development Ministry has roped in The Akshaya Patra Foundation to conduct more training workshops in other locations. This time the sessions will be carried out in Ranchi, Khunti and Ramgarh districts in the state of Jharkhand. The state’s mid-day meal brigade will learn to provide safe and hygienic food to government school students at workshops starting Thursday, 26 September, 2013.

The state HRD department, under the aegis of the central government, will be hosting the day long training programmes for a total of 150 people in these three districts. The training will start from Ranchi on Thursday followed by Khunti on September 27 and Ramgarh on September 28. At each place, 35 cooks, five each mid-day meal coordinators, block education extension officers and block resource persons will attend the workshop on ‘Tasty Nutritious and Hygienic Food’.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation serves the mid-day meal to 10,050 schools across the country while maintaining rigorous hygiene. During this training programme, the module will focus on methods of cooking nutritious food and value of ingredients besides generating awareness about malnutrition, precautions, methods of serving food and importance of washing hands. Each participant will be provided with a kit comprising an apron, towels, gloves, soaps, nail clippers, headscarves and utensil holders.

“It is a central government programme that was introduced in the wake of the Bihar midday tragedy. The main objective is to make cooks aware of the best hygiene practices so that such incidents never recur,” said director of state primary education Mamta.
